Jets’ Geno Smith Out with Torn ACL

As if the Jets quarterback scenario could not get anymore convoluted, it was announced Monday that Geno Smith will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.  Smith started his first game since 2014 and was 4-8 with 95 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the second quarter after being sacked by Ravens linebacker Matt Judon.

Smith initially wanted to return to the game but was advised not to do so by the medical staff.  He initially drew criticism for not returning to the game but standing on the sideline despite the reported knee injury.  The extent of his injury was only revealed after an MRI on Monday which showed a tear in the ACL of his right knee.  When asked about the injury Jets head coach Todd Bowles said, “”When you hear [the news], it’s tough luck for the kid and you go from there.”

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a ligament in the knee that prevents the tibia from sliding forward relative to the femur. It is an important stabilizer in the knee. The ACL can be injured during a pivot, when the foot is planted and the knee twists, or when landing awkwardly from a jump.

Symptoms of an ACL tear may include:

  • Feeling or hearing a popping noise in the knee
  • Pain on the outside and back of the knee
  • Immediate and significant swelling within the first few hours of the injury
  • Limited knee movement because of pain or swelling or both
  • The knee feeling unstable, buckling, or giving out

Smith will seek a second opinion on Tuesday to determine if surgery is necessary although most experts agree that his season is most likely over.  Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to start again Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
