CBD and It’s Use in Musculoskeletal Conditions

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. It is one of over 100 cannabinoids present in cannabis, and it has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential therapeutic benefits. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another prominent cannabinoid found in cannabis, CBD does not produce the psychoactive effects commonly associated with marijuana use. This means that CBD does not make people feel “high.” CBD is used for a variety of purposes, and its potential therapeutic applications are still an area of active research. Some of the most common uses of CBD include:

  1. Pain Management: CBD is often used to help alleviate chronic pain, including conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain. It may reduce inflammation and interact with receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in pain perception.
  2. Anxiety and Depression: Some people use CBD as a natural remedy for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It may have an impact on serotonin receptors in the brain, which are involved in mood regulation.  Both of these conditions have an increased incidence in patients with significant injuries and after surgery.
  3. Sleep Disorders: CBD may help improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia in some individuals, possibly by addressing underlying causes of sleep disturbances, such as anxiety or pain.  Insomnia is a common condition in patients with musculoskeletal pain.

It is important to note that not all CBD is the same.  In the Leafreport published in 2022 looking at 4,384 products produced by 188 companies 20% of companies did no purity testing, 88% of products potency was mislabeled, and 42% of companies didn’t test potency in all of their products.  Also 21% of products in this study contained THC.  This is very important for people who are tested for drugs as one can unknowingly fail a drug test if a product is not tested and certified.  At Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine we recommend Corganics, a CBD company, to provide a quality product that is tested for purity and potency.  Every single batch of Corganic CBD is tested through third party labs to ensure their products are of the highest quality available, without pesticides or detectable THC.  They are certified by the NSF so NCAA and professional athletes can be confident taking this product will not jeopardize any drug testing.  Lastly, Corganics has clinical studies showing the efficacy of their product.  In a randomized controlled longitudinal study involving over 700 patients Corganic CBD showed a 64% decrease in pain, a 53% improvement in sleep and a 63% improvement in overall anxiety.  Tested, certified and proven results in clinical studies are why the physicians at Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine recommend Corganic CBD to their patients interested in a product for these symptoms.  For more information go to the QR code below.
