Dislocated Shoulder Treatment

Shoulder dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone (the humerus) pops out of the shoulder blade’s socket (the glenoid). This can happen due to sports injuries, trauma, or accidents. Shoulder dislocations can be anterior (forward), or posterior (backward). Symptoms of shoulder dislocation include severe pain, swelling, and immobility of the shoulder joint. With recurrent dislocation pain and swelling may be less severe.  In some cases, the dislocation may only be partial called a subluxation or full which is a dislocation.  Some dislocations can be self-reduced (meaning the patient puts the shoulder back in place themselves) but in many instances medical assistance is needed to reduce a shoulder.  This typically is done in an emergency room but can be performed at Total Ortho Express by one of our orthopedic specialists.  The treatment of recurrent shoulder dislocation typically involves a combination of conservative management strategies and surgical interventions. Conservative management strategies may include physical therapy, rest and immobilization, anti-inflammatory medication initially for pain ad restoration of function.  There is no study that shows physical therapy or immobilization has success in preventing further dislocations in patients with traumatic instability.  In first time dislocators where conservative measures fail to provide relief and symptoms continue to persist, surgical intervention may be necessary. For patients with recurrent dislocation surgery is recommended to prevent further injury and the increased risk of osteoarthritis.  Surgical procedures may include arthroscopic surgery to repair damaged ligaments or cartilage and open surgery to address structural abnormalities of bone.
